Savage Beauty since 2003
The word "savage" has long been used as a weapon against Indigenous peoples, a label imposed by colonizers to dehumanize us and justify their oppression. By reclaiming this word, I am turning it into a symbol of strength, resilience, and defiance. Rather than allowing it to carry the negative weight of its past, I’m choosing to redefine it on my own terms.
To me, reclaiming "savage" is about owning my identity unapologetically. It’s a reminder of our ancestors’ strength in the face of incredible adversity, and our continued survival despite centuries of efforts to erase our culture. When I use the word, it’s no longer an insult—it's a badge of pride, representing fierce independence, cultural survival, and an unbroken connection to the land and traditions.
This act of reclamation is a form of healing, where we take control of the narrative and use language as a tool for empowerment, not oppression. It's about honouring our heritage while shaping our future with confidence and pride.
"Everyday is a SAVAGE DAY to find and build the BEAUTY within, all in time heals!"
